    Your work with Compu2Net is going from strength to strength and the management are justifiably impressed with you. There is a new project in the pipeline but until then your manager has asked you to help set up a apprentice scheme for school leavers so you may have some extra work to do – Remember the overtime will help pay for that expensive holiday!

  • Task 1 - Hardware and Software Information Leaflet

    The task you have been given is to create an information leaflet. The information leaflet should describe the hardware and software used to create and manipulate graphics and graphical documents.

    TIME ALLOWANCE

    You have been given four weeks (4 Hours) to complete this task although things are so pressured at work you are GOING to have to do some overtime and work from home. There will be other tasks at work demanding your time (Task 4 & 5).

    GRADING CRITERIA

    P1: describe hardware and software used to create and edit graphics.

  • Task 2 - Specifying new computers for the department

    The computers in the department are old and need to be upgraded. They need to be upgraded so they are able to run Microsoft Vista and Adobe Design Studio CS3.

    You have been asked by your boss to identify any graphics related upgrades that are required and email your findings to him by the weekend. He will expect you to justify your descision so be careful to explain why they should upgrade and what the benefits would be.Time Allowance

  • Task 3 - Potential Legal Implications

    Apprentices are often nieve to the legal implications of using and editing graphical images. You are to produce a presentation that describes the different factors to be consider when working with graphics.

  • Task 4 - Specifications for Designs

    The big day has arrived and you have been asked to head up your first big project. The client ‘XLive‘ are a global publishing business whose magazines and travel guides are sold all over the world.

    XLive specialize in producing publications that cover the lifestyle choices and hobbies of the 18 to 40 age group. XLive also keen sponsors and supporters of the strange and weird of the world (Think RedBull Vs No Fear Vs Lonely Planet). As part of the XLive centenary celebrations they are organising a festival. At the festival they will be launching their new logo (designed by you).

    They have asked you to design and create a logo and t-shirt design for the the festival.Produce a clear specification of the clients needs. You should include the target audience, the user requirements and any constraints stated by the client, such as house style, image size or output media.

    TIME ALLOWANCE

    Marcus has arranged to visit the company in four weeks to see the designs. That gives you 8 hours plus any overtime (homework) you need to do.

    GRADING CRITERIA

    P3: define and document a client and user need for three related graphic images.

  • Task 5 - Creating the graphics

    Your designs have been approved and XLive would like to take delivery of the finished images within a month.

    They would like you to present a portfolio of images based on your specification with three final images to be used on the T-Shirts.

    TIME ALLOWANCE

    You have 1 month plus overtime before Marcus returns to collect the finished portfolio.

    GRADING CRITERIA

    P4: Create and review three original graphic images to meet a defined user need.

    P5: Capture existing images using a scanner and a digital camera and edit them to meet a given user need.

    M2: Demonstrate the use of two advanced techniques in graphics manipulation.

    M3: Demonstrate the impact that file format, compression techniques, image resolution and colour depth have on file size and image quality.

    D1: Justify the following in connection with the production of graphic images to meet a client and user need: software and tools used, file format, image resolution, colour depth.

  • Task 6 - Reviewing the graphics

    Although the designs you have created are to be used on a t-shirt Dub2Custom would like to know the potential for the material you have prepared. They would like to know more about the variety of output media avaliable such as mobile phones, PDAs and mobile internet. They have asked you to produce a report that reviews the images created and looks forward to the future.

    GRADING CRITERIA

    M1: Compare the limitations of at least two different hardware devices and two different software packages utilised for the capture, manipulation and storage of graphics.

    D2: Evaluate the impact of evolving output media on the designing and creation of graphic images.
