  • By completing this unit candidates will develop their knowledge of different types of graphics that can be used in web pages.

  • AO1 - Evaluation

    Research, collect and describe a range of existing graphics used on web pages 

    You will need to collect an example of a navigation bar, navigation buttons and advertising banner from the homepage of two different websites. 
    Pass - For each graphic you must mention the following things; 
    • Positive and negative aspects 
    • Describe the purpose.
    Merit - You must also include the following things; 
    • Describe the suitability, 
    • Physical dimensions, 
    • Give valid reasons for the positive and negative aspects, 
    Distinction - You must also include the following things; 
    • Describe the target audience, 
    • Describe the impact. 
    • Mention the file size where appropriate.
    • Marking Alert - To be credited as comments on the different graphics, the comments must be clearly different and must be appropriate to the graphics being reviewed. It is therefore inappropriate to give credit for the same or similar comments made for each graphic.

  • AO2 - Design

    Plan the production of a range of web graphics for a client

    Pass - You will need to produce a basic sketch for the following things.
    • Three navigation buttons,
    • One navigation bar,
    • One advertising banner,
    You must describe the purpose and target audience for each of your graphics.
    Merit - You will need to produce a detailed sketch for each of your graphics.
    • Three navigation buttons,
    • One navigation bar
    • One advertising banner
    You must also mention the following things for each graphic;
    • Dimensions (width and height) 
    • You must mention the housestyle for your graphics and how each of your graphics will meet your housestyle. 
    • Your designs must have a clear structure.
    Distinction - You must also mention the following things for each graphic;
    • Target file size,
    • Download speeds,
    • Interactive features
    Your graphics must follow your housestyle completely. 
    Your designs must be of a professional quality so that some could create the graphics based on your plans.

  • AO3 - Create a navigation bar

    Pass - You must create a navigation bar that;

    • Uses text and graphics,
    • Is suitable for purpose.
    Merit - You must also ensure that your navigation bar;
    • Uses text and graphics of good quality,
    • Uses suitable colours,
    • Mostly adheres to your housestyle,
    • Uses suitable file types.
    • Is suitable for audience.
    Distinction - You must also ensure that your navigation bar;
    • Is effective,
    • Uses expanding and collapsing menus,
    • Completely adheres to your housestyle,
    • Is optimised for use on the web,

  • AO4 - Create a set of three buttons

    Pass - You must create three separate navigation buttons from scratch that;

    • Uses colour and text,
    • Are suitable for purpose,
    Merit - You must also ensure that your buttons;
    • Uses colour effectively,
    • Mostly adhere to your housestyle,
    • Uses suitable file types,
    • Are suitable for audience,
    Distinction - You must also ensure that your buttons;
    • Are interactive,
    • Completely adhere to your housestyle,
    • Are optimised for the web,

  • Create an advertising banner

    Pass - You must create a static advertising banner that;

    • Uses graphics and text,
    • Is suitable for purpose,
    Merit - You must also ensure that your advertising banner;
    • Combines colour effectively,
    • Is interactive,
    • Mostly adhere to your housestyle,
    • Uses suitable file types,
    • Is suitable for audience,
    Distinction - You must also ensure that your advertising banner;
    • Is animated,
    • Completely adhere to your housestyle,
    • Is optimised for the web,
    Your advertising banner does not have to be interactive but does have to be animated,

  • AO6 - Present your work

    Present work to a client for a specific purpose, using a suitable format for display 

    Pass - You must create a single webpage that will display the graphics you have created; 
    • One navigation bar, 
    • Three navigation buttons, 
    • One advertising banner,
    Merit - All of your web graphics must work when viewing the website including your interactive banner.
    Distinction - All of your web graphics must work when viewing the website including your animated banner, and interactive buttons. You must describe three different ways that graphics can be presented and evaluated between them.
